In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail in search of spices and ended up coming across a new world. In the process, he proved to the world you will not actually fall off the edge of the earth. Today, he is celebrated for helping to expand our world and knowledge with his own day. The City of Miami is helping to celebrate his life and the spirit of adventure he represents by hosting the Columbus Day Regatta. Boaters from all over can come together to race for some great prizes and satisfy that sense of adventure.

If you want to compete in the Columbus Day Regatta, check out the website at www.columbusdayregatta.net for everything you will need to participate. Held in Biscayne Bay, racers have the opportunity to compete over two days in various activities while enjoying the beauty of Miami beaches and great weather South Florida has to offer.

All year, committee members work to organize the annual Miami event. Together, with sponsor Gosling’s Black Seal and Gold Rums, they have planned many Miami events that not only satisfy adventure seekers, but those who love to watch as well.

The Columbus Day Regatta is committed to protecting the marine life of South Florida. The Manatee and Sea turtle are two species that have made a home in the Sunshine State and are protected by the Federal Government. Also, all contestants are encouraged to adhere to the strictest safety standards for everyone on board, as well as obeying all speed limits.

The Miami event will begin with a Skippers Meeting, where boat staff will be given all the information they need to compete in the race safely. Once the race has completed there is a trophy presentation at the Coral Reef Yacht Club. Here, winners and their friends and family will be able to enjoy great music and food to celebrate their victory. There is also a cash bar. Anyone wishing to compete must have a PHRF Certificate. If you do not have one, there is a page on the website where you can find out how to get one along with your entry forms. You can also buy t-shirts with a picture by artist AnnaMaria Windisch-Hunt.

In addition to the trophies available to everyone, first-time competitors can also compete for their own prize: The Rookie Award. The first-timer with the best time is awarded this trophy, providing they competed both days of the race. The Columbus Day Regatta is trying to encourage new people to compete by offering a discount off their entry fee if they are a first-timer. The Rookie award was created in 2002.

If you want love sailing and want to see some of the best compete, you will want to add the Regatta to your list of things to do in Miami. Parents and children alike can enjoy a great day in the sun, making memories that will last for years.
