When Christopher Reeve became paralyzed after a riding accident, the world was in shock. Many expressed their amazement that someone who played Superman was now so frail. Reeve, however, was anything but. He showed the world an optimism and strength that inspired many as he worked tirelessly to walk again. He brought awareness and support to the plight of other disabled people. His last years were spent not only fighting to walk, but to get that message of hope out. He wanted other people to know that having a disability does not mean you have to give up things you want to do.
The City of Miami is the site for an event that is dedicated to a similar purpose. Each year, people come from all over to participate in a wonderful event that you will definitely want to attend: Shake-A-Leg Miami Mid-Winter Regatta. This annual Miami event, now over a decade old, is dedicated to showing that a disability does not mean the end of a person’s world. This Miami event brings people with a variety of disabilities, including spinal cord injuries and cerebral palsy, together for some friendly competition. There are two different classes competitors race in. The Freedom class includes one able-bodied crew member. In all, 12 teams compete, putting themselves to the test while an eager crowd waits to see who will win. The Miami event is a great way to not only support those with disabilities, but to enjoy the sunny skies and fresh air that Florida has to offer. What vacation here could be complete without taking advantage of our
year-round warmth?
More than a race, it is a chance for those in the community to get to know each other and share their stories. They hold various social events during the regatta that include good food everyone will enjoy. After a day out in the sun, you just may need a recharge! Speaking of the sun, it can be pretty brutal at times. Make sure you bring some sunscreen along to make sure you are protected. This is especially important for the kids among you, who are sure to be in awe of the boats racing for the finish line.
