Miami is home of the Miami Dolphins since 1966 when Joseph Robbie along with famous actor, Danny Thomas, bought the franchise. The team’s name and mascot were chosen after the sea mammal which symbolizes intelligence and strength. The team’s logo is a bottle-nose dolphin surrounded by an orange sun altogether representing the spirit of South Florida. The team colors include aqua, orange, white, and navy. These colors are sported by all the “phin fans” or “dol fans” during the NFL game season from August to December and maybe even January.

It was in the early 1970s that the Miami Dolphins were at the height of their success. They were the first NFL team to make it to three consecutive Super Bowls. In the 1971 AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs, the longest NFL game made records.

In 1972, the Miami Dolphins set a record as they were the undefeated team of the year. This became known as the “perfect season” with extremely high ticket sales establishing NFL records. Don Shula, the team’s coach, became the first football NFL coach to declare 100th career victory in 10 short seasons after New England was defeated 52-0, which further encourage the Miami Dolphins to continue setting records. They ended the year as the first club ever to go 14-0 in a regular season.

Don Shula not only coached the team through a victorious year, but was also the head coach from 1970 to 1995. His name and hard work have made part of the Dolphin Honors history along with other retired numbers and important players. For instance, legendary Quarterbacks Bob Griese, retired number 12 in 1980, and Dan Marino, retired number in 1999, who have also made a great impact in the history of the Miami Dolphins.
