Miami hotel rates  -  Miami tourism

The recent increase in Miami hotel rates suggests that the Miami tourism industry is improving since its beat down by the economy. In February, we saw Miami hotel rates rise, with help from Super Bowl that boost Miami lodging taxes up by 33% over the prior year. According to Dade county’s figures, this was the biggest one month increase since 1990. This was even better then in February of 2007 when Miami tourism boosted Miami hotel rates and increased hotel taxes by 17%.

This is an encouraging comparison compared to last year in February, when hotel taxes fell by 24%.

Hotels in Miami lost considerable ground in the recession. This years collection was $8.7 million and only slightly higher than last years collection of $8.6 million. The numbers however portray a significant rebound in the making in the Miami tourism industry along with cruise bookings up and an increase in airlines traffic.

Cruise ships helped raise the occupancy level in both Broward and hotels in Miami, with a 20% increase in passenger traffic early in 2010 reported by the Port of Miami. Port Everglades reported 52,000 arrivals and departures, its highest day ever in March.

As businesses continue to watching meeting expenses, Angel hasn't seen a rebound in Miami corporate travel.
