A white cloud billows across the football field amid the sounds of violent winds blowing, and with it, the Miami Hurricanes football team steps onto the field. They are not tempting fate. That is their normal entrance. With the team’s history, they can afford the flashy entrance that has become their trademark. The University of Miami football team is one of the most successful college football programs in the country and it has become one of the more well-known Florida sports teams.

Ironically enough, the football program that is the envy of many almost did not survive. At one point, it was struggling so bad, the school considered not having a team altogether. However, a new head coach appointed in 1979 changed all that. Howard Schnellenberger had been head coach for the Baltimore Colts when he took over the team. He applied his pro ball knowledge to their offense and before long; the team was on its way to realizing his dream of them winning a national championship within five years. Others scoffed at this idea, but he and the team proved themselves with their first championship in 1984.

The team soon began to dominate the sport, setting winning streak records that still are unmatched, as well as breaking other's streaks as they did with Notre Dame and Nebraska in the 80's. They also have won all three of the Florida Cups that have been awarded to date. Besides that, The University of Miami is also regarded highly because it has the highest number of pro ball players to its credit, earning the nickname Quarterback U. Some of the players who have gone on to be quarterbacks in the NFL include Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde, and Steve Walsh.

Miami sport's fans will once again get to see the Miami Hurricanes in action when their season opens on September 1st with a game versus Marshall. On September 15, they play FIU.

The University of Miami does more then breaks records; they also give back to the community through camps. New coach Randy Shannon will lead a football camp for ages 8 through 17. Anyone interested in signing someone up for the camp should check the website for guidelines and to print out medical release forms and other forms needed to participate. The camp will take place from June 2nd to the 4th and there are day or overnight camps to choose from. Participants will learn all the basics they need to become great players one day. For more information on the camp, call 305-284-2563 or 1-800-442-2631.
If you are interested in the University of Miami and its sports program, staying in a Miami hotel or vacation rental in Coral Gables is the best since it is the closest location to University of Miami and, of course, Miami Hurricanes' games.
