2009 Miami Dance FestivalPosted on Friday, 04.03.2009
2009 Miami Dance Festival, Miami festival
The 2009 Miami Dance Festival opened on Wednesday, April 1st with the Ballet Flamenco La Rosa’s Flamenco dance-drama based on Shakespeare’s King Lear. The 2009 Miami Dance Festival offers six weeks of performances, classes and lectures that end May 10th. The Momentum Dance Company will do a true-to-current-reality performance with a comedic twist called Obamanomics.
A major highlight of the 2009 Miami Dance Festival is the world premiere of Dreaming Amazonia, a fusion of contemporary dance and traditional Brazilian dance. Brazilian choreographer Augusto Soledade visited Manaus to learn about the traditions of indigenous Brazilians. He interviewed people of the indigenous communities and created Dreaming Amazonia. The performance is broken up into two segments: the urban and the rural representations. In the urban representation, the dancers move quickly, sharply and chaotically without touching or affecting each other. In the rural representation, the dancers move together and their movements affect each other. Other shows featured in the Miami festival include a Bollywood evening and more.
